In Haiti and the Dominican Republic (which they name Hispaniola), Spanish colonists force Taino people into slave labor, mutilate them, or kill them. Columbus loads his ship with enslaved Taino people. In less than four decades, slavery and disease outbreaks contribute to the near-annihilation of Taino people on Hispaniola (Native Voices, "AD 1493: Spanish settlers enslave the TaĆno of Hispaniola").
